Earthcare Education Aotearoa

Earthcare Education Aotearoa offers hands-on education, primarily through interactive and community-scale workshops and courses; aimed at shifting our societies' extractive and over-consumptive practices, to create a more sustainable and positive legacy for future generations.

This Charitable Trust was established at the turn of the century to empower people to create positive change, building community through applying permaculture at local and bioregional scales. A bioregion is a distinct life-region based around a watershed. Its natural ecosystem and microclimate commonly differs from its neighbours, shaping its unique cultural character and economic opportunities. In this world of ever-increasing centralisation and anonymity, bioregions have the greatest capacity to affect change.

At the heart of this work is Robina McCurdy and her small team of co-workers, who offer a range of permaculture courses, facilitation, consultancy and original educational resources. Please explore the website to find out more ...

Localising Food Project - 4 small people carrying a carrot above their heads above the text.

We have been working on creating inspiring videos that document community food-resilience initiatives happening around Aotearoa.

Synthesising over 40 years of lived experience in the permaculture, intentional community and organic food system space, Robina has written many booklets and guides.

What is permaculture?

Permaculture can be defined in so many ways, so we want to give you a snapshot of what some of the pioneers of this movement define it as:

Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single-product system.
— Bill Mollison
A design system for resilient living and land use based on universal ethics and ecological design principles.
— David Holmgren
Permaculture is a design system for ecological and sustainable living, integrating plants, animals, people, buildings, and communities.
— Geoff Lawton

What is social permaculture?

Social Permaculture creates new sets of principles and guidelines for groups, preparing people to step into positions of power and leadership. It bring tools and skills to communities lacking accessibility and which are hugely impacted by destruction.
— Starhawk
[Social Permaculture is] using a design framework based on permaculture principles and ethics, that is specifically catered to people-based designs.
— Looby Macnamara
Social Permaculture is the application of Permaculture Principles to the design of sustainable social systems, for the creation a healthy, well-functioning society where all can thrive.
— Robina McCurdy
Permaculture is an integrated land-use design methodology based on ecological principles, with practical application from sustainable household to eco-nation to global restoration.
